If you remember only one thing from everything you read about scams, make it this: no legitimate government agency, court, utility company, or business ever asks you to pay with gift cards. No exceptions. Ever.

The iron rule

If anyone asks you to pay anything — taxes, bail, a utility bill, a tech support fee, a prize claiming fee, a debt — using gift cards, you are being scammed. It does not matter how official they sound, how much they know about you, or how urgent they say it is.

Why scammers love gift cards

Gift cards are essentially untraceable cash. Once a scammer has the card number and PIN, the balance is transferred and gone within minutes. Unlike bank wires or credit card payments, there is no fraud department to call, no chargeback process, and almost no way to recover the money. That's exactly why they ask for them.

The scams that always end with gift cards

  • IRS scam: "You owe back taxes — pay with iTunes cards to avoid arrest"
  • Grandparent scam: "Your grandson needs bail — buy Google Play cards"
  • Utility shutoff: "Your electricity will be cut off in one hour — pay with Steam cards"
  • Tech support: "Your computer has a virus — pay for the fix with Amazon cards"
  • Romance scam: "I'm stuck overseas and need Google Play cards to get home"
  • Lottery win: "Pay the processing fee with eBay gift cards to claim your prize"

What to do if you've already bought cards

Act immediately
  • Do NOT give them the card numbers yet if you haven't already
  • Call the gift card company immediately and report fraud — some can freeze unused balances

  • Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
